Safe Haven For Spammers In Canada
Despite everyone's excitement over the win for Facebook last month in the world-wide battle against spam, Facebook expects to recover little, if any, of the $873 million dollars awarded to them in the spam suit. The reason for this is that the spam company prosecuted by Facebook during the trial is based in Montreal, Canada. This spam organization, like many other spammers, chose to operate out of Canada due to Canada's failure to enact any anti-spam legislation. Victims of spammers are then forced to turn to American courts to prosecute the offending spammers. However, the US courts have little power to enforce their rulings in Canada, thus creating the perfect safe haven for spammers. Companies across the globe are calling on Canada to pass some sort of anti-spam laws in order to rectify this situation.
